Facial Growth Guidance & Development

“I treated my daughter exactly as I was trained. I aligned her bite and straightened her teeth.  But I missed something big. By the time I saw the link between jaw growth, breathing and sleep, her window for easy, natural correction had pretty much closed. I want other parents to know what I wish I’d known.  Proper jaw development is absolutely critical overall health, and we know now that we have to intervene much earlier.  The sooner we start early, the better chance we have to help kids breathe, sleep, and truly thrive.”

-Dr. Allison Hamada
Many parents assume orthodontics is about straightening teeth, but waiting until all permanent teeth come in can be a missed opportunity to develop the jaws. The jaw and airway develop rapidly in early childhood, and by age 9 or 10, natural forward jaw growth slows significantly. By age 12, the upper jaw is nearly fully developed, making it much harder to properly correct underlying issues without surgery or extractions.

That’s why Dr. Hamada recommends bringing children in by age 5 or 6 An early peek at their growth and airway can ensure that they develop a healthy, functional smile for life.

Why Early Intervention Matters

Since mass farming was introduced centuries ago, the human midface has been shrinking with every generation at an alarming rate. As a result, more and more adults are snoring and are being prescribed CPAPs.  Our children don’t have to suffer like our generation has!  We just need to intervene much earlier than we thought.  The days of waiting for permanent teeth to come in before getting braces are long gone.
“I had a patient, Chloe, who was constantly distracted and struggling in school. Her parents thought she had ADHD. When we evaluated her airway, we found that she wasn’t breathing well at night… After treatment, her sleep, her behavior and her grades improved…so did her confidence. There was never anything “wrong” with her.  She just needed us to give her a better airway so she could breathe and sleep better.”
Lots of children struggle with inattention, chronic congestion, academic challenges, and even anxiety and poor athletic performance.  These symptoms are so common today, that parents often chalk it up as “normal childhood stuff”… just as Dr. Hamada did with her daughter.  In reality, these can be red flags of an underdeveloped airway.

Signs Your Child May Need Early Growth Guidance

Mouth breathing or snoring at night
Loud eating or speech difficulties
Dark circles under the eyes
A small jaw or recessed chin
No spacing between baby teeth or slow tooth eruption
Persistent thumb sucking or pacifier use past age 3

By identifying
growth issues early, we can:

Prevent the need for extractions, braces, or jaw surgery.

Ensure that facial growth (and airway development) is on track.

Encourage proper airway development for easier breathing and better sleep.

Support lifelong dental and whole-body health.

How We Guide Healthy Growth

Palatal Expansion for Kids & Adults

  • Creates space for crowded teeth and expands the airway.
  • Helps prevent extractions and surgery later.

Growth-Focused Orthodontics

  • Braces and aligners are tools—we first focus on guiding the jaw and airway.
  • A customized plan improves long-term stability and facial harmony.

We specialize in early growth guidance because we know that seeing your child thrive instead of just surviving is what’s important to you.  Don’t put your child’s well-being on the hold. A simple, non-invasive consultation can determine whether your child’s growth is on track—or if early intervention could make a lifelong difference.
