What Is Airway Orthodontics?

Traditional orthodontics focuses on straight teeth. Airway orthodontics starts with a different question: can this person breathe well?

The way your jaw develops directly affects the size and function of your airway. A narrow palate creates narrow nasal passages, restricting nasal airway development from childhood. An underdeveloped jaw can push the tongue back, partially blocking the throat during sleep.

These structural issues don’t just cause crooked teeth — they cause snoring, restless sleep, chronic fatigue, behavioral problems, and health challenges that most people never connect to their bite.

Airway-centric orthodontics addresses the root cause through orthodontic airway expansion and functional jaw orthopedics. By guiding jaw growth and expanding the palate, we open the airway — improving breathing, sleep quality, and overall health alongside creating a beautiful smile.

This isn’t a trend. It’s a fundamental shift in how orthodontics should work, and it’s backed by growing research connecting craniofacial development to sleep-disordered breathing, cognitive function, and long-term wellness.

The Signs That Bring Families to Our Door

Many families come to us looking for braces or Invisalign — and that’s great. We love straightening teeth. But once you’re here, we look at the full picture.

And sometimes, the things you thought were just “normal kid stuff” turn out to be connected to how your child breathes and sleeps. That’s when orthodontics goes from changing a smile to changing a life.

Here are some of the signs that tell us there may be more going on beneath the surface:

In Children

  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Mouth breathing during the day or at night
  • Restless sleep, tossing and turning, or unusual sleeping positions
  • Waking up tired despite a full night of sleep
  • Difficulty concentrating, hyperactivity, or behavioral issues at school
  • Bedwetting past the expected age
  • Chronic allergies, congestion, or ear infections
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • Crowded teeth or a narrow smile

In Adults

  • Chronic snoring or diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea
  • Jaw pain, clicking, or TMJ dysfunction
  • Waking up exhausted or with headaches
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Teeth grinding or worn-down teeth
  • A history of orthodontic relapse — teeth that shifted back after previous treatment
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose

Many common bite problems like overbites crossbites and crowding arent just cosmetic theyre often the result of underlying tongue and airway dysfunction At Hamada Orthodontics we evaluate the root cause so treatment addresses both the bite and the breathing If any of these look familiar a free airway evaluation is the best place to start

What These Symptoms Could Mean

If you’re seeing these signs but aren’t sure what they point to, this connects the dots:

What You’re Noticing What It Could Mean How Airway Orthodontics Helps
Snoring or noisy breathing at night Narrow airway partially collapses during sleep Palatal expansion and jaw development open the airway
Mouth breathing during the day Nasal passages too narrow for adequate airflow Widening the palate widens the nasal floor, restoring nasal breathing
Trouble focusing or hyperactivity Poor sleep quality starves the brain of restorative rest Better breathing leads to deeper sleep and improved daytime function
Teeth grinding or jaw clenching The jaw shifts forward during sleep to open a restricted airway Treating the structural cause removes the need to compensate
Chronic congestion or allergies Narrow palate restricts nasal airflow, trapping irritants Expansion improves nasal drainage and airflow
Bedwetting past expected age Sleep-disordered breathing disrupts hormonal signals that control bladder function Improved sleep often resolves bedwetting without other intervention
Dark circles under the eyes Chronic mouth breathing and poor sleep reduce oxygen and circulation Restoring nasal breathing improves oxygenation and restful sleep
Crowded or crooked teeth Underdeveloped jaws don’t have room for teeth to come in straight Guided jaw growth creates space for teeth and a healthy airway

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not imagining it. These symptoms are connected, and they often point to an airway that isn’t functioning the way it should. A pediatric sleep breathing evaluation can uncover what’s really going on.

Why Dr. Hamada Does This Work

Dr. Allison Hamada didn’t discover airway orthodontics in a classroom. She discovered it through her own daughter.

After following every step of conventional orthodontic treatment with her daughter Sophia, Dr. Hamada believed she had done everything right. But the problems didn’t go away. Sophia never woke up well-rested. She was constantly congested. She struggled with concentration — no matter how much sleep she got.

As both a mother and an orthodontist, Dr. Hamada knew something deeper was going on. That instinct led her to look beyond traditional orthodontics and into airway health — an area that wasn’t emphasized in her training. What she found changed everything.

Looking at Sophia again through this new lens — considering her whole face, her breathing patterns, and her developmental history — Dr. Hamada saw what she and Sophia’s pediatricians had missed. The real problem was less-than-ideal jaw growth and a deficient airway that traditional treatment alone hadn’t addressed.

“As a mother, that’s very hard to accept. As an orthodontist, it has lit a fire in me. I absolutely know that I was put on this Earth to help these kids who are silently suffering.” — Dr. Allison Hamada

That experience reshaped everything about how Hamada Orthodontics operates. Today, every patient who walks through our doors receives a comprehensive airway assessment — because treating the whole person, not just their teeth, is the only way to get results that truly last.

How Airway Orthodontics Works

For Children: Guiding Growth While It’s Still Happening

Most parents don’t realize that roughly 80% of jaw growth happens by age 7. That means waiting until all the permanent teeth come in — age 12 or older — may be too late to correct certain structural problems without more invasive intervention.

When airway issues are involved, waiting isn’t neutral. Every year that passes with restricted breathing is a year of compromised sleep, reduced oxygen, and altered facial development.

Early orthodontic airway intervention works with your child’s natural growth to create lasting changes.

Palatal Expansion

A narrow palate is one of the most common causes of airway restriction in children. The roof of the mouth forms the floor of the nasal cavity — when it’s too narrow, the nasal passages are too narrow.

A palatal expander for kids gently widens the upper jaw over time, opening the nasal airway, creating room for permanent teeth to come in straight, and improving facial balance.

Palatal expansion is often the first and most impactful step in airway-focused treatment — and for many children, the breathing improvements are noticeable within weeks.

Guided Jaw Development

Using advanced techniques and light forces, we guide the upper and lower jaws into better alignment as your child grows. This supports proper facial development, healthier nasal breathing patterns, and a foundation for a lifetime of wellness.

Collaborative Care

Airway problems rarely have a single solution. Dr. Hamada works alongside myofunctional therapists, ENT specialists, and pediatricians to make sure every piece of your child’s health puzzle is addressed.

We coordinate with providers offering myofunctional therapy in the New Orleans area to ensure tongue posture and breathing habits are corrected alongside our orthodontic work — because structural improvements hold best when the muscles support them.

In one of her early airway cases, Dr. Hamada referred a young patient to a myofunctional therapist before starting any orthodontic treatment. Just nine months later, that child’s bite had improved dramatically — without a single bracket.

That’s the power of treating root causes.

For Adults: It’s Not Too Late

If you’re an adult dealing with snoring, sleep apnea, TMJ pain, or teeth that shifted back after braces as a teenager, airway orthodontics can still help.

Many adults in the New Orleans area searching for sleep apnea treatment don’t realize that an orthodontist can address the structural causes behind their breathing issues — not just manage the symptoms. Adult treatment targets the jaw and airway problems driving your condition.

Treatment options for adults include clear aligners, braces designed with airway goals in mind, and in some cases, palatal expansion using techniques specifically developed for adult bone. Many of our adult patients tell us they wish they’d known about this approach years ago.

Our Full Range of Orthodontic Treatment

Airway health is the lens through which we view every case — but the tools we use to get there include the full spectrum of modern orthodontics.

Whatever your situation calls for, we have the experience and technology to deliver results.

Early Intervention and Phase 1 Treatment

For younger children showing early warning signs of airway or development issues, Phase 1 treatment focuses on guiding jaw growth, expanding the palate, and creating a healthy foundation before comprehensive orthodontics begins.

No matter which treatment path is right for you or your child, every plan at Hamada Orthodontics is built with the same philosophy: healthy breathing, proper jaw development, and a smile that lasts.

What Makes This Different from Regular Orthodontics

Most orthodontic offices focus on one thing: lining up your teeth. And they do it well. But if the underlying structure — the jaw, the palate, the airway — isn’t addressed, those straight teeth may not last, and the health issues behind them will continue.

Here’s what sets airway orthodontics apart at Hamada Orthodontics:

We start with breathing, not brackets. Every consultation begins with a thorough airway assessment and growth evaluation. We want to understand how you or your child breathes before we ever talk about treatment.

We treat root causes. Crooked teeth are often a symptom of underdeveloped jaws. Instead of just moving teeth around within a jaw that’s too small, we work to develop the jaw itself — creating room for teeth and air.

We look at the whole person. Congestion, allergies, anxiety, fidgety behavior, poor posture, speech issues, teeth grinding, even loud eating — these can all be signs of an airway struggle. Dr. Hamada actively screens for the subtle signs that other providers tend to brush off.

We collaborate. We partner with myofunctional therapists, ENTs, sleep specialists, and pediatricians because lasting results require a team approach. Your care doesn’t exist in a silo.

We use advanced technology. Digital scanning, 3D imaging, and the Pitts21 bracket system allow us to deliver precise, efficient treatment with lighter forces and better outcomes.

Why Families Choose Hamada Orthodontics

When you’re choosing an orthodontist for your family, you need more than credentials. You need someone who gets it. Whether you came in looking for braces, Invisalign, or answers about your child’s breathing, here’s why families throughout the Greater New Orleans area trust Hamada Orthodontics:

A doctor who’s been where you are. Dr. Hamada’s journey started with her own daughter. She understands the worry, the uncertainty, and the relief that comes when you finally get answers. She treats every patient the way she’d want Sophia treated.

Expertise you can feel. From the moment you sit down, you’ll notice the difference. Dr. Hamada explains what she sees, why it matters, and what your options are — clearly and without pressure. You’ll leave your first visit feeling informed, not overwhelmed.

A team that genuinely cares. Our staff doesn’t just schedule appointments. They remember your name, ask about your kid’s soccer game, and make every visit feel like coming to see people who are invested in your family’s health.

Three convenient locations. With offices in Metairie, Luling, and Destrehan, we’re where your family already lives and works. No long drives across the metro area for quality care.

Flexible payment options. We accept most dental insurance plans, and we offer payment plans designed to make treatment accessible. Your child’s health shouldn’t wait because of budget concerns.

Results that surprise you. Many families come in expecting straighter teeth — and they get that. But they also leave with kids who sleep better, breathe easier, and focus more at school. Adults stop waking up with jaw pain. That’s what happens when your orthodontist looks at the whole picture, not just alignment.

You’re Making the Right Decision

Here’s something we want you to hear: if you’ve been worrying about your child’s breathing, sleep, or behavior — or your own — and you’re looking into this, you’re already doing a great job.

Parenting is full of hard calls. Finding the right provider for something you can’t quite put your finger on takes courage. It’s easy to second-guess yourself when other doctors have told you everything is fine.

We’re here to take that pressure off your shoulders. When you walk into Hamada Orthodontics, you’ll sit down with a team that listens.

We’ll explain what we see, what it means, and what your options are — in plain language, without the pressure. If treatment makes sense, we’ll walk you through every step. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too.

This should be a decision that takes stress out of your life, not one that adds to it. That’s exactly how we approach every family who comes through our doors.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first visit to Hamada Orthodontics is designed to give you clarity, not confusion. Whether you’re coming in for braces, Invisalign, or because something about your child’s breathing or sleep doesn’t seem right — you’ll get the most thorough evaluation in the Greater New Orleans area. Here’s what happens:

A conversation, not a sales pitch. We’ll talk about what brought you in — the symptoms, the concerns, or simply the desire for a great smile. No question is too small.

Clear answers. We’ll explain our findings in terms that make sense. If we identify airway concerns, we’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing and why it matters. If everything looks great and you just need braces, we’ll tell you that too.

A plan that fits your life. If treatment is recommended, we’ll outline your options, timeline, and investment. We offer flexible payment plans because access to this kind of care shouldn’t depend on your budget.

No pressure. No obligation. Many families leave their first appointment feeling relieved — not because they got a treatment plan, but because they finally have a complete picture of what’s going on. That’s what we’re here for.

A comprehensive evaluation. Even if you came in just for straight teeth, Dr. Hamada evaluates jaw development, bite alignment, breathing patterns, and airway function for every patient. We use digital imaging and thorough clinical examination to get the full picture.

Sometimes that evaluation uncovers things no one else has caught — and that changes the entire conversation for the better.

Real Results from Real Families

Families across Jefferson Parish, St. Charles Parish, and the Greater New Orleans area have experienced the difference airway-focused care makes:

“My 7 year old son has a tongue tie and the first step to fix it was to start with the palate expander. Dr. Hamada had asked us if he still wet the bed sometimes and he did. After getting the palate expander, he stopped wetting the bed. He is very, very active and has calmed down some also after. The palate expander is more than just a wider palate, it helped improve his sleep and behavior too.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is airway orthodontics?

Airway orthodontics is an approach that evaluates and treats the relationship between jaw development, dental alignment, and breathing function.

Rather than focusing only on straight teeth, airway-centric orthodontists like Dr. Hamada assess how structural issues in the jaw and palate affect the airway — and treat accordingly. The goal is better breathing, better sleep, and better overall health alongside a beautiful smile.

How do I know if my child needs airway orthodontic treatment?

If your child snores, breathes through their mouth, grinds their teeth, sleeps restlessly, has difficulty focusing, or wakes up tired, these could be signs of an airway issue

Don’t wait for a specific age — when airway is involved, early evaluation is important because it allows us to work with your child’s natural growth for the most effective results.

At what age should my child be evaluated?

Rather than a one-size-fits-all age recommendation, we encourage parents to watch for symptoms. Snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty concentrating, chronic congestion, and behavioral challenges are all reasons to schedule an evaluation — regardless of your child’s age.

The earlier we identify airway concerns, the more effectively we can guide development.

Can adults benefit from airway orthodontics?

Absolutely. Adults dealing with sleep apnea, TMJ pain, chronic headaches, snoring, or teeth that shifted after previous orthodontic treatment are often excellent candidates for airway-focused care. While adult bone is less malleable than a child’s, modern techniques allow us to achieve meaningful structural improvements.

Can airway orthodontics help with mild sleep apnea?

In many cases, yes. By expanding the palate and improving jaw position, airway orthodontics can increase airway space and reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnea symptoms.

For mild to moderate cases, orthodontic intervention — often combined with myofunctional therapy — can provide significant relief. Dr. Hamada will evaluate your specific situation and coordinate with your sleep specialist if you have one.

Should I see a dentist or orthodontist for sleep apnea?

Many adults in the New Orleans area search for a sleep apnea dentist, but an orthodontist with airway training is often the most qualified provider to address the structural causes behind sleep-disordered breathing.

While a general dentist may offer oral appliances to manage symptoms, an airway-focused orthodontist like Dr. Hamada evaluates jaw structure, palate width, and airway anatomy to treat the root cause.

If structural issues are contributing to your sleep apnea, orthodontic intervention can provide improvements that a mouthguard alone cannot.

How is an airway evaluation different from a sleep study?

A sleep study (polysomnography) measures what’s happening while you sleep — oxygen levels, breathing interruptions, and sleep stages. An airway evaluation at our office looks at why those problems may be happening.

Dr. Hamada examines jaw structure, palate width, tongue position, breathing patterns, and facial development to identify the structural causes behind sleep-disordered breathing. The two evaluations complement each other — one diagnoses the problem, the other identifies what’s causing it.

How is this different from regular braces or Invisalign?

Traditional orthodontics primarily straightens teeth. Airway orthodontics addresses the underlying structure — the jaw width, palate height, and airway space — that determines both dental alignment and breathing function. You still get a beautiful smile, but you also get improvements in breathing, sleep, and overall health that conventional treatment alone can’t provide.

We offer metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign, and other options — all designed with your airway and overall health in mind.

Do airway orthodontic patients need an ENT referral?

Not always, but many benefit from one. Dr. Hamada takes a collaborative approach and works closely with ENT specialists, myofunctional therapists, and other providers when needed.

If enlarged tonsils, adenoids, or other structural factors are contributing to your child’s airway issues, she’ll coordinate the appropriate referrals to make sure every aspect of care is covered.

What age is too late for airway-focused orthodontics?

There’s no age that’s “too late.” While early intervention in children allows us to guide jaw growth most effectively, adults of all ages can benefit from airway-focused treatment. Modern techniques including palatal expansion for adults, clear aligners, and braces designed with airway goals have expanded what’s possible well beyond childhood.

Does insurance cover airway orthodontics?

Many dental insurance plans include orthodontic benefits that apply to airway-focused treatment. Coverage varies by plan, but our team will verify your benefits, explain what’s covered, and help you maximize your insurance.

We also offer flexible payment plans to keep treatment accessible for families across the New Orleans area.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment duration depends on the individual. For children, early intervention typically involves a Phase 1 treatment period followed by monitoring during growth, with comprehensive treatment later if needed. For adults, treatment generally ranges from 12 to 24 months.

Dr. Hamada will give you a personalized timeline during your consultation.

What if my pediatrician says my child’s snoring is normal?

Light, occasional snoring can be harmless. But habitual snoring — especially combined with mouth breathing, restless sleep, or daytime symptoms like trouble focusing or behavioral issues — often points to an airway problem worth investigating.

Many of our families come to us after being told their child would “grow out of it.” Trust your instincts. A consultation with an airway-focused orthodontist can give you peace of mind either way.
